Alcohol fuels are biofuels that include ethanol, methanol, propanol and butanol. In a survival context, ethanol is the only alcohol fuel of real relevance as it can be produced easily, and run both 2-stroke ethanol and 4-stroke engines . It can be used for lighting in pressure lanterns and has uses as antiseptic, solvent, and over the years as a crude anaesthetic. Methanol production is less practicable for survival situations as the equipment and processes required are mostly far more complex than a simple ethanol still although the destructive distillation of wood is a simple process to be considered in a survival situation.
