Compendium of Roman History

Contributed by David Verne

Marcus Velleius Paterculus completes his Compendium of Roman History this year. It covers Roman history from the Trojan War up to the death of Livia last year. His history is not the most accurate, heaping praise upon his patron, Tiberius. He also praised Sejanus, who was a friend. [1]

My Take by David Verne
During this period, the only people with enough time to write history were senators or wealthy private citizens. Most histories written by the Romans were biased and inaccurate, but modern historians are able to fact check these histories through archaeological evidence and checking multiple ancient sources. Once this is done, they can tell whether an ancient historian is writing with more facts or rhetoric.

Notable Births

  • Nerva : He will become politically powerful, but will remain in the shadows, surviving several regime changes.
  • Poppaea Sabina : The second wife of the future emperor Nero.
