The Palomar knot is a fishing knot used to tie tackle directly to fishing line. It is extremely strong, approaching 100% of the break strength of the line used to tie it. For freshwater spin fishing, this knot is the knot to know.
This knot is very strong. It forms a double loop in the eye of the tackle, which lends to its strength. Once the know is mastered, it can be tied very quickly.
This knot can be difficult to master. Until it is mastered, it can be very clumsy to tie, especially with very large or very small lures or other tackle. Also, proper tying of this know results in a very long tag end, which then must be trimmed and wasted. Therefore this knot is not appropriate for tying flies onto expensive leaders.
