Hugelkultur is a method of earthworks where wood is covered with soil to create a planting mound. The wood in the mound breaks down over time adding organic matter to the soil and also retaining water. The mound also creates a gradient of water with the top drying out faster and the bottoms being more moist. This along with the result of the mound creating sunny and shady spots creates many micro-climates.
