Banning Philosophers

Contributed by David Verne

Some conservative senators, especially friends of Tacitus and Pliny, are scheming to bring about an end to Domitian's reign. Domitian didn't know which specific senators were plotting against him so he took several precautions. Since many of these senators are believers in the Stoic philosophy, Domitian has expelled all philosophers from Rome to prevent a larger conspiracy from forming. [1]

My Take by David Verne
The philosophy of Stoicism wasn't about not showing any emotion; rather it was focused on having mastery over one's body through self-discipline. Their four cardinal virtues were Wisdom, Courage, Justice, and Temperance. The Stoics also held that rank and wealth were of no importance in social relationships and believed in the natural dignity of all human beings. They advocated for better treatment toward slaves, and many Stoic tenets are found in Christianity today.
