Building the Colosseum
Contributed by David Verne
Destruction of Nero's massive palace continues this year, and the land is used for other purposes. On the drained bed of Nero's private lake, Vespasian begins construction of the Colosseum, which the Romans called the Flavian Amphitheatre. It will take eight years to complete and will have a capacity of 50,000 to 80,000 people. The construction of the Colosseum was seen as a populist move by Vespasian, since the land it was being built on had been seized by Nero after the Great Fire of Rome.
