Building the Colosseum

Contributed by David Verne

Destruction of Nero's massive palace continues this year, and the land is used for other purposes. On the drained bed of Nero's private lake, Vespasian begins construction of the Colosseum, which the Romans called the Flavian Amphitheatre. It will take eight years to complete and will have a capacity of 50,000 to 80,000 people. The construction of the Colosseum was seen as a populist move by Vespasian, since the land it was being built on had been seized by Nero after the Great Fire of Rome. [1]

My Take by David Verne
The name Colosseum comes from its proximity to the Colossus of Nero. The Colossus was a 100ft tall bronze statue of Nero; the Statue of Liberty is 151ft tall. The Colossus was turned into a statue of the Roman sun god, Sol, and will stand until the 4th century.
