An Aging Emperor

Contributed by David Verne

Antoninus Pius, the current emperor, turned 70 this year. He began suffering from the effects of old age and was unable to stand upright without splints of wood bound to his chest as a primitive form of corset. He also started eating dry bread to stay awake during meetings. More administrative duties were taken on by his heir, Marcus Aurelius.

My Take by David Verne
"May you live in interesting times," is supposedly an ancient Chinese curse, thought the origin is debated. The origin of the phrase doesn't tarnish the truth in it. The reign of Antoninus Pius is considered the Golden Age of the Empire, mainly because nothing happened. The empty pages of history are the best times to live.
