Britney Spears, Madonna and "Bee Season"

Many people have been touched by the wind-lost man of Comino Isle. In some ways they are grateful to him and in other ways they are in despair, wishing they had never known his name. Those who set foot on his island of meditation carry their own triumph or defeat with them. Abraham Abulafia is the founder of the school of Prophetic Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism. He has written many great works and his mystical influence will reach out through the ages to Madonna who will wear a red string bracelet to draw strength from Rachel of the Bible. The main character of the book, Bee Season, will draw mystical strength from a spiritual connection with Abulafia and Britney Spears will be destroyed by that same connection. My Take by Alex Shrugged
I confess to benefiting from kabbalistic meditation. I used it when I was struck with pain so severe I thought it was a heart attack. Through my training I was able to escape the pain by dropping into a meditative state deeper and longer than I had ever done before. It scared the heck out of the paramedics but I became the pride of the emergency room nurse who had been trying to convince the doctors about how important controlled breathing and meditation were to pain management. In a sense it is a type of self-hypnosis and one could benefit from such pain management in a survival situation. By the way, my extreme pain came from muscle cramps due to a lack of salt.

FYI, I am definitely not recommending kabbalah. It is difficult to do right and easy to do wrong and when it goes wrong, it goes very wrong. Witness Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan as spectacular examples of it going terribly wrong.

Update 2014-Feb-11: I watched the movie "Bee Season" last weekend. The film is slow but it represents ONE aspect of Kabbalah (and Abulafia) in both a good and bad light which is reasonable. Like the little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead: when she is good she is very, very good and when she is bad she is horrid. Yes. A good book to read as an overview of Kabbalah is 9 1/2 Mystics by Herbert Weiner. He seeks out the Kabbalists of his day (before the rock stars did) and interviews them.

Puppet King May Not Be a Puppet

Margaret, Queen of Scots and the Maid of Norway, died two years before on her way to claim her throne. In order to solve the problem of succession, King Edward I of England chooses John Balliol as king of Scotland out of 13 candidates, but instead of pulling back after completing this duty, King Edward treats King Balliol as his puppet and Scotland as his own. This treatment establishes the first major grievances of Scotland with England. War is coming and King Balliol will not remain a puppet for long. [9] [10] [11] [12]

My Take by Alex Shrugged
When King Charles I of Sicily placed a puppet Pope in office to help France, he had no idea that his puppet Pope would go off half cocked. Puppets can be unpredictable as King Balliol will be.

Mongols Have Shaky Hold on Java

After two failed attempts at an invasion of Japan and a failure invading Vietnam, Kublai Khan has received a most disturbing message. Java has sent back his envoy with a brand across his face as is the custom with marking thieves. Java no longer wants to pay tribute. They must think they are safe on their island kingdom, but Khan launches a thousand ships with 30,000 of his elite troops to teach the Javanese a lesson. Unfortunately for Kublai Khan, it will be his elite troops that will be taught the lesson the following year and make haste to the mainland before they are trapped and slaughtered. [13] [14] [15]

My Take by Alex Shrugged
Oddly enough Marco Polo was traveling through Sumatra and Java the same year. Since Marco Polo was closely associated with the Mongols one wonders what the Javanese thought of him as the Mongols began their invasion. Did they think he was a spy or was he so different from the Mongols that they never made the connection. He might well have been a spy.
